What is it?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive and unpredictable sweat production, which exceeds what is necessary to regulate body temperature. It primarily affects the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, armpits, and face, but can occur in other areas of the body. Hyperhidrosis can significantly impact quality of life, causing social discomfort, embarrassment, and anxiety.
The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is not fully understood, but it is generally considered a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which controls the body's involuntary activities. In cases of primary hyperhidrosis, there is no identifiable underlying cause. Secondary hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, can be caused by medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, menopause, diabetes, obesity, or side effects of certain medications.
Treatment possibilities
Hyperhidrosis treatment may include conservative approaches, such as topical antiperspirants, oral medications, and stress management techniques. In more severe cases or those that do not respond to conventional treatments, other procedures may be considered, such as the application of botulinum toxin (Botox) to temporarily block the nerves responsible for sweat production, or surgical sympathectomy, which involves interrupting the nerve signal that triggers excessive sweating.
If you suspect you have hyperhidrosis, it's recommended to see a dermatologist, who can make the correct diagnosis and recommend the best treatment plan for your individual needs.
