Breast augmentation

What is it?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that aims to increase the size and shape of the breasts. The procedure involves inserting breast implants, which can be filled with various materials, such as silicone or saline solution.
It is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed on women worldwide. Reasons for undergoing the surgery can range from the desire to increase breast size to improve self-esteem and confidence, to the need to restore breast shape and size after a mastectomy or other surgical procedure.
Before deciding on breast augmentation, it is important for the patient to understand the risks and benefits of surgery, in addition to discussing their expectations with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon.
How to prepare?
Undergo medical examinations and evaluations;
Quit smoking before surgery;
Adjust your current medications; avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatories, and herbal medications, as they can increase bleeding.
Postoperative
Use of post-operative bra;
The post-surgical recovery period is usually 24 to 48 hours, followed by a rest period of 7 to 10 days;
Pain and swelling only occur during the first few days. Exercise and normal activities will be permitted following individual guidance from your plastic surgeon.
Main questions
What is the consultation like?
Before placing a breast implant or performing a mammoplasty, Dr. Fabio likes to ask patients to show him photos of breast models they consider attractive, as well as breast types they dislike (those that are too large or too prominent, for example). This way, during surgery, the images are projected so that Dr. Fabio can tailor the procedure to the patient's expectations.
Before choosing a prosthesis from a variety of sizes and models, molds are used and tested on the patient. Only after the mold is selected is the prosthesis selected.
What is the natural membrane that surrounds the prosthesis?
When we remove a prosthesis, whether for replacement or explantation, it is possible to observe that there is a membrane that surrounds the entire prosthesis.
Why does this happen?
It's a natural reaction of the body that always forms. It's rare for this membrane to become a major encapsulation. At this stage, there's no discomfort or pain. Aesthetically, the procedure's results remain perfect. However, the encapsulation can increase to greater degrees in a few cases. The patient may begin to feel the implant and even notice some asymmetry. However, in these cases, it's crucial to consult your doctor/surgeon for the best guidance.
How do you know if it's time to change your breast implant?
Does the ten-year rule still apply? According to Dr. Fabio, the concept of replacing the implant every ten years is a thing of the past. Today, a practice that has been widely recommended is getting breast imaging to prevent breast cancer. Starting at age 35 or 40, have an annual ultrasound, mammogram, and possibly an MRI. These three exams can also identify any defects in the implant. In other words, by preventing cancer, you can also prevent implant rupture and determine if it's time to replace it.
