Tattoos are very common these days. Regardless of social class or gender, many people have one or two tattoos. But it's important to take care of them, as skin is a vital organ. Therefore, we've put together some tips from our beloved dermatologist Dr. Bárbara Magalhães to keep your skin healthy and your tattoo even more beautiful!

Pre-Tattoo
Before choosing the design and location of the tattoo, it's crucial to check for any lesions in the area. Ideally, consult your dermatologist for a dermatological evaluation of the moles. If the lesion needs to be removed, it's best to do so before getting a tattoo.
If the desired area has a mole, it's best if the tattoo artist doesn't cover it with ink. Ideally, they should outline the mole and leave at least a 2-millimeter margin, as it can grow and reveal significant signs in the future.
Burnt skin?
It's crucial to avoid sunburn when getting a tattoo. The ink needs to penetrate the dermis, which causes trauma, i.e., damage to the skin. Sunburn will incur further trauma and be painful during the application process.
Allergies?
Checking for allergies is crucial before getting a tattoo. A dermatologist can analyze and identify possible contact dermatitis caused by dyes. If your scalp itches after dyeing your hair, be careful! Contact allergies can develop over time; we're not born with them. If the tattoo is done before an analysis and an allergy is confirmed, it will be very difficult to remove.
It's time for the tattoo
It's no secret that choosing a good professional is essential. After all, tattoos involve direct contact with blood. Tattoo artists must maintain proper hygiene to prevent disease transmission, with a well-sterilized environment and tools.
Post-tattoo
A tattoo is like a graze on the skin that will need time to heal. Therefore, it's common for tattoo artists to leave a suitable bandage. There's no need to constantly apply antibiotic ointments. Using them unnecessarily can cause contact allergies over time.
How to care for your tattoo?
The most important thing: Moisturize your skin! Keep the appropriate dressing, such as the plastic wrap that is commonly used. Healing will be complete in about four weeks. It's best to use neutral moisturizers, sweet almond, coconut, and sesame oils, and cover with plastic wrap. Besides helping with healing, it also leaves the tattoo with more pigment.
